Will Hawaii’s Bankrupt Circus Fold Its Tent?

03/30/16

A Hawaiian Hilton resort is trying to evict a company that put on a circus-inspired CabaRAE show on its grounds until October, but the organizers say the show might still go on.

The bankrupt company, RAE Entertainment Group LLC, recently told a judge that it is trying to find a replacement act to use the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s leased 7,000-square foot showroom.

In documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Honolulu, RAE Entertainment Group lawyer Christopher Muzzi said the company is “in talks with several interested parties that have a successful record of business in Hawaii.”

Mr. Muzzi declined to comment about potential new acts.

CabaRAE’s last show was held on Oct. 14, according to court papers. RAE Entertainment Group officials said they spent more than $4 million to outfit the tented space at the Hilton on Waikiki Beach in Oahu. (Hilton officials dispute that amount.)

“For [the company] to have any opportunity to reorganize, it needs the property,” Mr. Muzzi said in court papers.

U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Faris hasn’t ruled yet on whether the resort can evict the company or whether he’ll grant an extension of time.

The company filed for bankruptcy on Jan. 15 but hasn’t fully explained in court papers how it got into trouble.
