Freight trains will again pass through the town of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, starting Wednesday, about five months after the derailment of a crude-carrying train devastated the Quebec town close to the Maine border.

A town official told Canada Real Time the trains will run through the town on a rebuilt section of track on municipal property. Only dry-goods-carrying trains will be allowed, he said.

The July 6 derailment of the oil-laden train, operated by Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Ltd., led to 47 deaths and destroyed much of the town’s core. It also put the spotlight on the growing practice of shipping oil by rail as North American energy production booms.

MM&A Railway is currently under bankruptcy protection.
