The board of beleaguered Franco-Belgian bank Dexia SA on Monday approved the rescue plan agreed by the governments of Belgium, France and Luxembourg, WSJ reports, which includes the sale of the Belgian unit for €4 billion ($5.35 billion) to the Belgian state and a €90 billion guarantee over its funding for the next ten years.
WSJ’s Washington Wire reports a top Republican lawmaker is questioning whether the Energy Department rushed approval for $4.75 billion in loan guarantees to three companies just hours before much of the funding for the loan guarantee program was set to expire.
Economist Simon Johnson says in Bloomberg that fears that Europe’s debt crisis will spread to the U.S. show that the problem of “too big to fail” hasn’t bee fixed, despite passage of the Dodd-Frank financial reform legislation.
