The Broke and the Beautiful: Twofer Edition

This week on The Broke and the Beautiful, Ginuwine dismisses bankruptcy rumors, and Sister2Sister magazine had a short stay in Chapter 11.

Does Ginuwine need to pony up some cash? The singer’s lawyer mentioned in a court hearing that the singer was “very close” to filing for bankruptcy, noting that Ginuwine “owes my firm a ton of money and a bunch of other people a ton of money” because of his impending divorce. But according to Ginuwine’s Instagram page (h/t Uptown Magazine), the rumors aren’t accurate. Ginuwine, whose real name is Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, said reports that his wife left him broke aren’t true. “We are NOT yet divorced, but we ARE currently separated and working towards coming to our own agreement, without lawyers,” he noted. “We’ve kept it quiet because it is really no ones [sic] business but ours and our family’s.” Mr. Beckner didn’t respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Entertainment magazine Sister2Sister filed for Chapter 11 protection on Monday, weeks after its publisher said the brand will no longer exist in print. However, court papers filed Friday show a Maryland bankruptcy judge has since dismissed the case for the company’s failure to comply with local bankruptcy rules.

The attorney who filed the case didn’t respond to requests for comment. Calls to Sister2Sister’s office led to voicemail boxes that were no longer accepting new messages.

Sister2Sister got its start in 1988 as a newsletter for women in the entertainment industry. The publication later evolved into a magazine, offering celebrity news and Q&As with stars. In a recent interview with the Root, publisher Jamie Foster Brown said Sister2Sister, which caters to black women, will focus on its website and stop publishing a monthly magazine.
