Casey Anthony Bankruptcy

In July, 2011, just after the her murder trial, I wrote a blog post suggesting that Casey Anthony should file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. As many of you have read in the news, Ms. Anthony has at last filed for bankruptcy protection. All bankruptcy petitions are public record and you may read Casey Anthony’s  petition here. 

There are no obvious legal issues in her bankruptcy at first glance. Some of her aggressive creditors may file an “adversary proceeding” in the bankruptcy court seeking to have their particular debts survive the bankruptcy.

For those of you who closely followed this case, the bankruptcy petition offers you a glimpse into her life post-trial. The Petition lists the names of attorneys, doctors, and other experts she has used (or at least owes money to). The Petition indicates that Casey Anthony has not converted her celebrity into wealth.

The Petition is filed in the Tampa, Florida, bankruptcy court even though the Petition states that the debtor lives primarily in Orlando. Tampa and Orlando both are in the Middle District of Florida. Debtors anywhere in the Middle District may file bankruptcy petitions in either Tampa, Orlando, or Jacksonville. Her bankruptcy attorney has filed the petition without receiving any money or other form of compensation. Many of her former attorneys are owed large amounts of money.

In the future, I may comment on this bankruptcy to the extent it raises any legal issues or serves as a vehicle to describe the bankruptcy process.
