Rolling Meadows Bankruptcy Lawyer Explains Whether To File On Your O...

Should you file bankruptcy with an attorney or should you attempt to file on your own?  If you asked me that question 10 years ago, I might have suggested that it was possible to file bankruptcy on your own with forms purchased at the local office supply store.  Today, there is no way I would ever suggest that it was possible.  There are simply too many steps and forms that one has to file to properly navigate through a bankruptcy case from start to finish.  And please don’t be fooled by advertisements that claim to prepare all of the documents for you.  Since the bankruptcy courts have local rules, they have been able to promulgate local forms.  These forms cannot be purchased through an office supply store.  They can be downloaded from the bankruptcy court website and then tailored to fit the case.  However, most lay persons are not going to be able to accomplish this feat.  I would strongly recommend that you consult with an attorney to learn just how much is involved in filing bankruptcy today.  Further, visit your local bankruptcy court and talk with the filing clerks.  They will tell you how difficult it is to file on your own.  Like any other legal procedure, you want to make sure that the attorney you choose is highly skilled in that particular area of the law.
