Bankruptcy Overlooked By Financial “Experts”
As I said before in an article I wrote What Suze Orman Doesn’t Understand About Bankruptcy , “Bankruptcy attorneys like me look at things differently than many people, even so called “financial experts”.
There are a few similarities. Living within your means is the goal I have for my clients. That is also what the experts like Suze, Dave Ramsey, or a multitude of others say but with a big difference.
But one thing I do differently is try to do is look at things broadly, factoring in traditional solutions they might suggest, with legal ones such as bankruptcy, fighting on legal grounds, or sometimes settlements with legal guidance.
Non-attorneys aren’t allowed to give legal advice so they may just completely ignore the legal options of really getting to a place where you can start over. As an attorney I can talk about all options they do, legal or otherwise – and I usually do.
But as an attorney, my focus is to try to come up with the best solution for clients considering many different legal and non-legal options. Bankruptcy is a powerful tool to use to get to a long term goal where you live on what you make. To overlook it, or not be able to discuss and explain it, leaves out a big option that should be weighed and considered when trying to find the best personal solution.
While my practice is concentrated in bankruptcy, I always will discuss non-bankruptcy alternatives and other avenues if I don’t think that bankruptcy is the best option for a client.
In addition to preparing bankruptcy cases, I often work with my clients on budgeting and financial education which is the key to getting them back on their feet. You can get rid of all the debt, but if you don’t balance the budget you will find yourself in trouble again.
The focus of many of the “experts” on getting people to live within their means is a good goal, but bankruptcy allows them to get there faster without sacrificing their long term financial health.
