Houlihan Lokey Opens A New Front For Boutiques: Consulting

Houlihan Lokey is firing up PowerPoint and striking a strategic partnership with a consulting firm.

The boutique investment bank has taken a stake in Chicago-based management and strategy consulting outfit Bridge Strategy Group, it announced today.

It’s the latest move  within the clique of ambitious boutique investment banks who have been on an expansion kick of late.

But it’s of a slightly different flavor than what we’ve seen in the past.

Feeling Vindicated

My Consumer Finance students used to think I was wasting their time by spending a whole class session on usury laws and taking them into the nitty-gritty of their application (or non-application). I think usury is important conceptually (but for the Marquette decision and its fallout, our regulation of consumer credit would likely be very different), has a lot of neat statutory reading twists and turns, and it actually can matter for non-bank lenders.  Among other things I cover is the NY state usury statute, including its criminal provisions.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Calls Temporary Truce on Nortel Bond Interest Fight

A U.S. bankruptcy judge has called a temporary truce in a fight between Nortel Networks Corp.’s U.S. division and the Canadian parent company over a $1 billion settlement with bondholders.

Judge Kevin Gross pushed off until October a planned September showdown over the settlement, which has to do with how much interest is owing on some $4 billion in bond debt issued by the former Canadian technology icon.

Bankruptcy Beat Snapshot: Stephen Darr

Stephen Darr is no stranger to complex bankruptcies, but one case tops the list.

In June, a bankruptcy judge authorized Mr. Darr to take control of TelexFree LLC, a Massachusetts-based company accused by federal securities regulators of operating a massive pyramid scheme.

“I’ve been involved in a lot of interesting cases,” said Mr. Darr, a senior managing director at Mesirow Financial Consulting LLC in Boston. “TelexFree is number one.”
